A 16-foot-high statue depicting Zinedine Zidane headbutting Marco Materazzi during the 2006 World Cup final has been erected outside Paris’s Centre Pompidou – one of the world’s foremost modern art museums. Crafted by Algerian artist Adel Abdessemed, the statue goes against the tradition of making monuments in honor of certain victories – with exhibition organizer Alain Michaud saying that it’s “an ode to defeat.” The public sculpture has been installed to accompany Abdessemed’s solo show at the institution which runs from October 3-January 7, 2013.
