Monday night, the University of Maryland and Under Armour debuted their latest efforts on American primetime as they defeated Miami in their season opener. Aside from starting off the season on the right foot, Maryland’s uniforms were the talk of both the fashion and sporting worlds alike. The controversial uniforms boiled down to the bipolar look of the uniform which could easily have been developed as two separate themes. Instead the overall design saw the University of Maryland and the state’s flag sharing the jersey’s real estate right down the middle. Maryland has enjoyed a fruitful relationship with Under Armour thanks to founder Kevin Plank’s own personal interest in the university he once played for and attended. The relationship is in many ways similar to Nike CEO Phil Knight’s relationship with his own alma mater Oregon who has seen themselves as key benefactors of various perks thanks to a powerful alumni member.
