Back in June, Bon Iver’s self-titled sophomore album hit stores with an impact, charting at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and selling 104,000 copies in its first week. The other day, Iver’s brainchild Justin Vernon appeared on NPR’s World Cafe and performed the album-ending track, “Beth/Rest.” However, instead of playing the instrumentation heard on the album cut, Vernon sat down with nothing but a piano and microphone in front of him and gave a beautiful, stripped-down rendition of the song. Given the stark contrasts between the ’80s-esque sound of the original version and the raw sound of this solo piano version, the two might as well be considered different songs. Which do you like better?
