It seems like the folks over at Sony are trying to jumpstart another one of their recent signees’ careers by reaching out for the assistance of one of their more prominent hip-hop artists, J. Cole. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, though. Four years ago, singer/songwriter/guitar player Elle Varner graduated from NYU’s renowned Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music with the “most likely to get signed” and “most likely to win a Grammy” awards. Now she’s working on her debut album, which will feature songs such as this one, “Only Wanna Give It To You.” The track has an old school, ’90s R&B/hip-hop feel that showcases Varner’s voice and songwriting skills. Cole’s verse isn’t a bad touch either. Varner’s already achieved one of NYU’s predictions, and who knows, perhaps songs like this one will help her reach the plateau of the second.
