Artisanal bandana prints, tuxedo blazers cut like motorcycle jackets, patchwork silk scarves, nylon anorak windbreakers – all are pieces that could only be brought together by one design house: Margiela. And, in fact, all are pieces that made their debuts during Maison Martin Margiela’s Spring/Summer 2012 runway show in addition to some less outlandish garments including exquisitely cut suits, marled v-neck sweaters, a subdued cotton baseball jacket, and a slew of tweaked traditional footwear in leather and suede. Although the standard Margiela blacks, beiges and greys are all in full force here, the collection also included some unexpected pops of bright cobalt blue and vermillion. Always elegant and logo-free, the enigmatic Belgian design brand’s latest line of menswear is just as quirky and understated as expected.
