i am vacationing in china right now and was also surprised to learn that facebook, youtube, and other sites were blocked. This was the best explanation i could find following the help of some members from another board:
"Facebook, YouTube and many other sites are blocked. I go to China on business all the time. It's just blocked and all they care about is blocking it from their people not foreigners. If you want to get on Facebook while you are there use a Personal VPN,surfbouncer.com to unblock the web sites. I use that while there not only to unblock sites but protect my internet connection from the multitude of hackers."
