A first look at the artwork of Erik Parker evokes strong elements of color and surrealism. You’re often left wondering, what exactly is the basis and theme behind his work? His inspirations, however eclectic span the likes of American comic books, heavy metal music, hip-hop and psychedelia — and it’s this very amalgam that translates into a body of stimulating and highly detailed work. The product incorporates a distinct psychedelic color palette with unconventional and disjointed imagery. Ahead of his upcoming solo show this month, we take a look into the studio of Parker in Brooklyn, New York. Over a casual conversation about the inevitable rising rent prices of Brooklyn, Parker’s minimalist two-room studio houses much of the work that will make its way into his upcoming September 6 opening of “Bye, Bye, Babylon.” The Paul Kasmin Gallery-hosted exhibition will continue on until October 13.
