Name Tagging with Martha Cooper

Last month, pioneering Hip-Hop documentarian Martha Cooper debuted her newest publication Name Tagging at the OBEY Pop-Up Shop. Covering the prevalent notion of tagging with stickers once used primarily in the corporate environment, we took the opportunity to visit with Martha Cooper regarding her book, her contributions to graffiti and Hip-Hop and the importance of her getting involved early on as a photographer and the difficulty current photographers face. Name Tagging is available now through Mark Batty Publisher with a retail price of $12.95.

    I think that without Martha Cooper there wouldn’t be a proper image of graffiti and street hard. She was excepted by the graffiti scene in the very beginning and she wasn’t into the art, she wasn’t into the bronx scene, she was just herself taking photos of something different. It was her passion to expose this once rebellious act to a booming worldwide art style.
