HARVEST by haroshi has been a refreshing take on recycled artwork, known for producing various items out of used skate decks. Showcasing all of the collective’s work throughout the years, they recently held an exhibition at the PLSMIS Gallery in Tokyo. Images of the show can be seen below, courtesy of Brandon Shigeta.

Skate decks eventually see its life shortened by snapping, cracking and/or wearing out. Purchasing new decks is a never ending cycle and this was evident by the tower of old decks that were reaching to the ceiling of my room. We can’t throw away these decks because they hold sentimental meanings to us. I looked at these unusable decks every day and thought there must be something I can make with these. I decided to make some accessories with the old decks and this was the birth of Harvest. The works of Harvest are through the perspectives of a skater and as an artist. As a skater, I want to take responsibility of reusing skateboards when they were no longer useable. Also, as an artist I want to explore the possibilities of what can be done with skateboards. We see the care and effort that a skater can have for his/her deck and we also acknowledge the origins of a skateboard. We believe that if the small things we do can connect to sustainability then we’re doing something right. We’d be satisfied in our effort when people look at products and start thinking of ways to recycle.

Wow! Look at these responses! Skaterboys are really easy to impress! Not that I don’t like the pices, it’s all really neat! But it’s obvious they are made from excess material and probably with the help of some technichal staff of a skateboard producer… Not really an ARTWORK but a nice byproduct..

In response to your question: I doubt the pieces are hollow on the inside. From what it looks like his process is sticking/wood gluing the boards together very tightly almost into a large rectangle (what you would imagine a bunch of solid boards stacked on top of each other look like) and then ought of that block he begins to shave away the shape of his figure (apple, deer, etc..) and is left with all the lines of the different colored boards and they bend to the curve and shape he wishes and smoothing it to a T. You can get some very interesting results if you are using a lot of colors like he is in this case.

Wow, that’s so beautiful and intricate, I’m impressed that the artist finds enough time to skate and wear out so many decks!!

wow I wish I was in Japan to see this. Great attention to detail. Makes me want to donate my old deck and see what he can do with it.

This is definitely the most craziest art that i’ve ever seen with the use of skatedecks. They are all shiny and smooth on the outside and just absolutely awesome looking. Hiroshi must’ve had mad flow from his sponsors(lots of free decks) in his day or lots of moneey.I was wondering if each square that is visible on the out side is an individual cut of skatedeck all meshed together like a puzzle. basically what i’m asking is, is the deer head hollow inside or not? either way that and all the other pieces shown in the pics are amazing. way to build points for skaters. they’re not just hoodrats and restless kids that are a menace to society like the public think. they’re natural born artists.
