Ok thinkers, he could have spent $100 on materials somewhere
    but he didn’t.
He took his own cash and made it into art
and he made it worth more.
    Fucking Awesome! Brilliant!
    He should be “the Treasurer”

Always impresses with people who take every day objects and turn them into art. I am sure ther is a message some where in there too lazy to figure it out I just appreciate the beauty.

These are cool, but what makes them special is the medium. Although, isn’t it illegal to deface currency?

  8. Posted by:stickers on October 15, 2009 at 1:44 pm

I love this kind of art.
Looks like Brian Dettmer artwork “Book Autopsies”

if you follow the add links to a lazer cutting site you will find that almost any material can be cut or etched, paper and fabric included.
I like the provocative use of “money” to draw attention to its abstraction. Real or not the artist is making you realize that “money” has a perceived value only and is worthless with out context.

Wow thats some of the coolist art work I have ever seen. Very nice work, were can I get one?

  11. Posted by:Anon on October 14, 2009 at 10:58 am

laser etching on multi-layered creations this isn’t real money DUH!!! its a laser etching. you cant laser etch paper/fabric it would burn from the lazer.

    this work is beyond amazing!

people die everywhere! not only in africa, that dying people in africa stereotype is so nauseating

  14. Posted by:pb on October 14, 2009 at 5:44 am

amazing stuff…and who really cares if money was destroyed in the process. At this point, the only real way to end inflation is to just burn our money. Might make our debt-backed currency worth a bit more when it becomes scarce. The Federal Reserve would shit a brick if we did that instead of asking for more money like we have been doing for the past 80 or so years….The riots would at least be entertaining…

uhmm – the artist is American, which means he DID use his own country’s currency. Besides, what is the point of art if not to rock the boat from time to time?

  16. Posted by:Steph on October 14, 2009 at 12:35 am

I think it’s creepy that a skull would be on US money. that’s just fuckin wrong.

  17. Posted by:meee on October 14, 2009 at 12:11 am

Do you people know how to read?
    1) ‘Use his own countries money’ ==> “New York based”
    2) ‘Is this a lazer or exacto’==>”laser etching”

    goodness.

  18. Posted by:Charissa on October 13, 2009 at 11:29 pm

First of all, it’s wicked cool artwork! Second, our USD isn’t really worth anything anyway. The only reason people are still using it is because our greedy, corrupt government says the money is worth something. The truth is, we might as well be using the old Confederate Greenbacks from the Civil War because there is absolutely Nothing in the national treasury to back it up. No gold. No silver. Not even some stinkin copper. So don’t hand me this crap about it being illegal to deface money. The love of money is the ROOT OF ALL EVIL. I for one am NOT going to bow down before the “almighty dollar.” *eyes rolling*

  19. Posted by:Rkki on October 13, 2009 at 10:50 pm

hes not really defacing money cuz you can still clearly see what it is supposed to be so yea…i think its awesome and you shouldnt discredit talent

  20. Posted by:Derek on October 13, 2009 at 10:38 pm

How do you know its REAL money? How do you know he didnt print them off on regular paper just for this purpose?

  21. Posted by:Fenny on October 13, 2009 at 9:57 pm

Douglas: He did use his own country’s money, he’s from New York, which is in the US.

  22. Posted by:Mindaika on October 13, 2009 at 8:32 pm

Fun fact: It’s NOT against the law to deface money like that. The law prohibiting the defacement of currency is intended (and worded) to fight counterfeiting and/or passing off currency as a different value.

  23. Posted by:Douglas on October 13, 2009 at 7:50 am

It’s against the our laws to deface money like this, why didn’t the artist use his own countries money I wonder.

  24. Posted by:Lacy on October 12, 2009 at 8:35 pm

    they’re probably rejected bills…

  25. Posted by:Fujimoto on October 12, 2009 at 8:13 pm

Who the hell is going to prosecute? If destroying currency is punishable by jail time, isn’t that defeating the purpose? He destroyes maybe a few hundred and they would spend thousands on court costs, lawyers, and the cost of keeping him in jail and feeding him. It’s just artwork, and really cool art at that.

  26. Posted by:nke on October 12, 2009 at 4:20 pm

Nice. Remember, this is being shown in London, who’s gonna arrest him, he ain’t cutting pounds up.

  27. Posted by:skiz on October 12, 2009 at 1:31 pm

Scott gave me my first tattoo 4 years ago when he was working at a shop on Long Island called Da Vinci Tattoo. What a great artist. I’m very happy to see he’s on the up!

  28. Posted by:Estey on October 11, 2009 at 1:45 pm

Now, I would actually be impressed if they were 100 dollar bills.

  29. Posted by:rhobere on October 11, 2009 at 12:19 pm

OMG, cutting up bills is a crime?!?!?!?! someones going to Alkatraz….

Great work, although I do think it was done wid da lazer.

  34. Posted by:CCS on October 7, 2009 at 5:16 pm

They’re stacks of one hundred one dollar bills. Who gives a sh*t about the US treasury. SC is PiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiMP.

  35. Posted by:JmJ on October 7, 2009 at 4:40 pm

It’s very possible that these were done with bills set for destruction. Every day millions of dollars are shredded by the mint, and they often give them away for projects such as this.

  36. Posted by:TREVERIN on October 7, 2009 at 12:44 pm

these are DOPPPPPPPPE! everyone’s going crazy but who said these were real currency? lol they could be high quality prints.

  37. Posted by:DPS on October 7, 2009 at 11:27 am

I love these artworks, but isn’t it a crime to cut up currency?

    From the U.S. Treasury:

“..Whoever mutilates, cuts, disfigures, perforates, unites or cements together, or does any other thing to any bank bill, draft, note, or other evidence of debt issued by any national banking association, Federal Reserve Bank, or Federal Reserve System, with intent to render such item(s) unfit to be reissued, shall be fined not more than $100 or imprisoned not more than six months, or both.

Defacement of currency in such a way that it is made unfit for circulation comes under the jurisdiction of the United States Secret Service….”

  51. Posted by:Jesper D on October 5, 2009 at 8:29 pm

they are a lot more exensive than a hundred bucks. i think they retailed for at least 1000 bucks when he did the Off Bowery pop-up shop at Colette.

However his tattoo hour rate is at least 300 bucks if you get a reservation so there you go…
