Blazing a trail on the New York retail scene back in the late 80′s, Union NYC would be the first outlet for many different brands over the course of its illustrious history. As a well-respected cornerstone of streetwear retail, the store links up with Nike Sportswear on a Dunk High Challenge Supreme. Borrowing the iconic aesthetics of the Agassi signature Tech Challenge II, we see bits of this applied to the Dunk High. A logo strap is also added to the product with Union NYC icons on the heel as well. Only 100 pairs are rumored to be in existence and available now via Osneaker.com.

What does New York City have to do with Andre Agassi and the Air Tech Challenge? Very little. Stupid, abominable concept. Agassi hails from Las Vegas. And he never did hot lava in New York. He did it famously at the 1990 French Open, but wore neon yellow at the U.S.

In light of that, I really don’t get this shoe. If it’s going to drop in New York behind everyone’s back, why not drop it in the colorway that Agassi competed in at the 1990 U.S. Open? Of course, the young knuckleheads buying crap like this have no clue about the history of the Air Tech Challenge, the Dunk or Agassi, and it takes a post like this to point out how aimless and clueless a hot lava Air Tech Challenge/Dunk hybrid is in New York, especially with a NYC logo and a Union-labeled strap. Not well thought out at all. Blame Nike and blame that Union outfit. And Union has a lot to do with hot lava and Agassi, too. I’m sure he shops there a lot.

This is like pink Terminators and multi-color Big Nikes, also abominations. Part of the Big Nike’s identity was that it was a white shoe as opposed to its predecesor, the moody, aggressive grey and navy Terminator. White uppers set the Big Nike apart. Unfortunately, that’s not the case anymore, so the Big Nike has lost its identity. Nike has turned its shoes over to younger employees who don’t understand their own company’s product line. Amazing. This is what happens when meddlers make messes.

I just called the UNION NYC store (open on Easter!?) The guy on the phone explained the whole concept to me. Said it was meant to look like a Bootleg Dunk bought off of a factory worker in China, he also mentioned the release date 4/11 = 411 Union was the spot for info; hence why no one got info on these sneakers ’til they sold out. Sucks I guess I’ll wait for Flight Club since Osneaker.com has no size 9′s.
