Bringing to light to one of the largest and decrepit areas of Africa, artist JR created a massive showcase in Kibera Kenya. Taking over a year of planning and organization, the artist covered over 2,000 square meters (approximately 25,500 square feet) of rooftop with eyes taken from the very female inhabitants of Kibera. In addition to the eyes seen on the rooftops, eyes have also been pasted onto a local train and for small periods at a time, intersecting with hillside smiles to create a face. More images can be seen at JR-Art.net.

I think it’s unfair to criticize this on the basis of whether he should have spent the money directly on helping the Kenyan people out. Not only is this an interesting and provocative piece of artwork in my opinion, but it’s trying to bring awareness to a social issue which many people ignore. At times the idea of simply “bringing awareness” might seem like a easy way of alleviating your conscious, yet I think in this case its plain to see theres a true effort and attention to the cause. Even so, as an artist if you can combine the elements of art and helping people, the effort at least should be acknowledged. If you can’t do anything else, yell at the top of your lungs.

its a good thing that art feeds people and builds schools and buys meds and cures crap… other wise the gagillion $ that this most likely cost would have been been a big waste …ha.

im sure he felt rad for totally spending all that doe and saving the day like he did when he was on the plane.
