British artist Nadia Lee Cohen has re-released her WOMEN (2020) photobook as a bootleg iteration that draws on the culture of Japanese fanzines. The latest edition of the book dropped today in Tokyo at Dover Street Market Ginza and will be made available worldwide next week.

Originally published by IDEA, the second go was wrapped in an OBI band designed by Charlie Denis in collaboration with Verdy, who runs the Tokyo-based label, Girls Don’t Cry. Cohen felt an urge to remake the book as a way to capture “all the important and unimportant details that went into making it,” according to the artist via Instagram. The 100 mise-en-scêne portraits from the WOMEN series are presented as editorial spreads that add a new layer to Cohen’s eerily cinematic exploration into contemporary femininity.

While “there’s no overt messages” to much of her practice, Cohen previously told Hypeart, the artist does “love putting a big bright theatrical spotlight onto the things we may consider as boring or familiar.” Those looking to add WOMEN, Pirate Edition! 女性 to their collection, the new iteration is limited to just 750 copies.
