Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen is the eponymous British high fashion label of Alexander McQueen, founded in 1992. Its early collections were controversial and shocking, with unconventional and lavish runway shows. McQueen was awarded “British Designer of the Year” by the British Fashion Awards four times between 1996 and 2003 for his work on his label, and he was also awarded the CBE and named “International Designer of the Year” by the CFDA in 2003. His success resulted in the Gucci Group acquiring 51 percent of his company in 2000, with stores launching worldwide. A menswear collection was launched in 2005 and continues to show at Milan Fashion Week, while the brand’s womenswear shows moved from London to Paris starting in 2001. The company expanded its womenswear offerings by launching its first women’s pre-Spring line in 2008 and Cruise in 2010. The online store was launched in the U.S. in 2008, expanding to the UK in 2010. The diffusion label McQ was launched in 2006. McQueen served as his brand’s creative director until his untimely death in 2010, with Sarah Burton taking this position afterwards. Following McQueen’s direction, Burton’s McQueen was steered towards a more low-key tone. Burton also designed the dress that Catherine Middleton wore during her wedding to Prince William in 2011. The same year, Burton was named Designer of the Year by the British Fashion Council. As of 2014, Harley Hughes is McQueen’s head of menswear.
