Timberland is an American manufacturer of outdoor apparel and footwear founded by Nathan Swartz in 1918. He began his shoemaking career in Boston, Massachusetts and by 1952, he had acquired half of the interest of the Abington Shoe Company. The name Timberland was introduced in 1973 for a line of waterproof leather boots that featured innovative injection-molding technology, and because the boots were so popular, the company’s name was changed to “The Timberland Company.” The 1980s saw the company expand internationally, first into the Italian market and then worldwide. By the 1990s. the company began introducing backpacks, clothing and women’s shoes to its product range. Timberland is currently owned by VF Corporation, and reported an annual revenue in 2011 of $1.5 billion USD.
