Converse is an American shoe company, best known for the canvas All Star shoe, founded by Marquis Mills in 1908. One of the well-known series Chuck Taylor All Star brought success to Converse, with Chuck made an adjustment to the sneaker to provide greater support and flexibility on its functionality and made it one of the greatest basketball shoes with history. Today, Converse produces its All-Stars footwear in a variety of materials, shapes, and colorways. It has successfully bridged the gap between professional sneakers and smart-casual.
Upon its original release, the black Fragment Design x Converse Chuck Taylor All Star represented thedesign prowess of Hiroshi Fujiwara. The simple two tone color scheme created a perfect balance. Fragment Design has returned to offer a similarly designed All Star with the concept of (PRODUCT) Red in mind. The colorway is identical to the black version albeit for the symbolic use of red. Available now at select Converse dealers.

This year has marked a monumental stage in Converse’s long and storied history. Reaching the century mark has been no easy task for any brand, however through the strengths of Converse’s marquee products, the brand has created a lasting legacy as it looks towards the future. Their strong foundation has enabled them to create and lead strong humanitarian efforts such as the (PRODUCT) Red campaign which since day one has set out to help in the battle against AIDS. The centurion mark along with the (PRODUCT) Red project came together in an event celebration titled Celebrating 1HUND(RED) Artists. (PRODUCT) Red was conceptualized as a means for some of the world’s leading creative minds to create original artworks highlighting the struggle against AIDS. Although it would be difficult to list all one hundred contributing artists, the list includes Rostarr (USA), Rinzen (USA), Michael Schall (USA), Hiroshi Fujiwara (Japan), Jeremyville (Australia), Michael White for Dondi White (USA), Colletivo Design (Brazil), Grandpeople (Norway), Supakitch (France) and UPSO (USA). The March 27th event was highlighted by DJ performances by Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) and special sets by Simian Mobile Disco and DJ Spencer Sweeney. The installations were designed by a few of the New York based contributors, Rostarr, Rinzen and Michael Schall. The collection of sneakers will release over the upcoming months, with 10% of wholesale price of each product sold benefiting The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

The (PRODUCT) Red concept has been chugging along in full force recently with many big-time team ups seen with Dr. Romanelli and Lupe Fiasco, each effectively making their mark. The time has come for UNDFTD to step up to the plate. Their No Raw Dogs All Star also includes matching t-shirt & Bearbricks. Set to release on April 5th at all UNDFTD USA locations and online in the e-store.
Most likely a hype building move by Converse, quality pictures have surfaced of a Lupe Fiasco designed All Star which is allegedly not slated for release. The shiny patent upper was conceived with the (Product) Red humanitarian theme in mind which correlates with the subtle use of red highlights. As mentioned, no release date is expected for these joints.

The Converse (Product) Red initiative has developed extensively since its inception, looking high and low for a wealth of interesting designers to offer their own perspectives on the philosophy of (Product) Red. One of the more interesting designers to collaborate with Converse is Umbereen Qureshi, whose talents have been applied predominately to the automotive industry. Her design focuses around a minimalist repeating image of Africa. Her design ethos was based on her learnings that inspirations should become repeated and highlighted constantly. She further highlights the uncanny ability of artists to offer strong visual messages that go beyond words. There has not been any release info yet regarding this All Star.

In the process, he changed his generation and left the world with a legacy of songs that continue to inspire generations to come. To honor this music great, Converse debuts the Kurt Cobain collection of shoes that feature artwork and scribbles borrowed from his personal notebooks. Distressed in the way Kurt Cobain wore them, the shoes provide a rarely seen glimpse into the head of this musical and lyrical genius with sketches that display his hopes, dreams and lyrics from amazing songs such as “Come As You Are”. Often pictured wearing Chuck Taylor All Star, Jack Purcell or One Star shoes, the collection includes versions of all three shoes with wear and fray detailing and Kurt Cobain’s signature subtly embroidered on the shoe’s outer. Available in black and white versions with lyric, notebook scribbles or distressed detailing, shoes in this collection retail for MSRP $50 – $65 and will be available nationwide at specialty retailers and online at www.converse.com beginning in May.
