Converse is an American shoe company, best known for the canvas All Star shoe, founded by Marquis Mills in 1908. One of the well-known series Chuck Taylor All Star brought success to Converse, with Chuck made an adjustment to the sneaker to provide greater support and flexibility on its functionality and made it one of the greatest basketball shoes with history. Today, Converse produces its All-Stars footwear in a variety of materials, shapes, and colorways. It has successfully bridged the gap between professional sneakers and smart-casual.

With an upcoming anniversary slated to be celebrated next month, pictures and information regarding an UNDFTD, Medicom Toy and Converse project has surfaced. Although most of the information pertains to next month’s release including 100% and 400% Bearbricks, the fate of the Converse All Star is yet to be determined. Last night, Converse held a launch party for Dr. Romanelli’s new Converse (RED) shoe in Los Angeles. The new shoe was made with (PRODUCT) RED which is a program to help fight AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis. Inspired by the (PRODUCT) RED project, Dr. Romanelli went out to create a band-aid motif Chuck Taylor. According to Supertouch, Dr. Romanelli said:
“The 1HUND(RED) Artists project really motivated me to create something unique and I choose the band-aids as a fix for positive change.”
Aside from the unveiling of Dr. Romanelli’s sneaker, a high octane exhibition included other artist created footwear and artworks including Hiroshi Fujiwara (Japan), Jeremyville (Australia), Michael White for Dondi White (USA), Colletivo Design (Brazil), Grandpeople (Norway), Mike Schall
(USA), Supakitch (France) and UPSO (USA).
In addition, Lupe Fiasco was there at the party for some live performances. For those who missed out, you can check out the party pictures at Supertouch. The sneakers itself go on sale at the beginning of this month at the nation’s leading sneaker stores, Undefeated and Dave’s Quality Meats with 10% of net whole price going towards Geneva’s The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
Not immune to the trends of hybrids, one of Converse’s biggest releases forth coming for the 100th Anniversary of the brand is the mash-up two of it’s perennial stars, the Weapon and the All Star. In some ways you can consider the All Star Weapon Leather a much slimmer version of the original Weapon, as it maintains relatively the same style of upper. Other releases include the All Star G&S originally issued at the 1960 Olympics and the WC, another Olympic release back in 1936.

Originally conceived in 1940, the Skidgrip is another release to commemorate Converse’s 100th anniversary in 2008. This particular Skidgrip Repair includes a different array of materials and colors with a pre-distressed midsole. Available now at Converse dealers, including ripe.
Converse first released the Jack Purcell Rally sneaker back in 1976. Now 24 years later, they’re back with the Converse Jack Purcell Rally II. Part of Converse’s 100th Anniversary collection, the Rally II features a canvas upper and has words RLY printed on the midsole. Coming in two colors, these retail for 7,245 Yen and will be available at Flauge.
Product (RED) is a program where if you buy a (RED) product, a percentage of the sale will go towards curing HIV/AIDS in Africa. The latest (RED) product is from Converse which teamed up with trend setter Hiroshi Fujiwara on a Chuck Taylor Low in a simple red colorway. One of HF’s many popular logos is tagged on the back of the shoe. According to Converse, this shoe will be released on March 1st.

Converse Japan has updated their latest releases with two upcoming Chuck Taylor releases. The Thermal pack features the use of tried tested and true thermal material to form the basis of the upper, while the MD pack is a subtle interpretation of the checker pattern. Both are available in a high top and low top version as well as multiple colors. Check your local Converse dealer for availability.
With Converse celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2008, the releases are coming at a frantic pace. Originally debuting in 1976, the Pro Leather from Converse took the basketball world by storm as it was frequently seen on the feet of some of the games finest stars. The sneaker is a tribute to the Black Fives, a term designated for the five black starting players in a racially segregated basketball era of the past. Within the Black Fives Converse collection to celebrate Converse’s 100th anniversary, three different models are available from different parts in history. This particular Pro Leather includes a distressed and dirtied upper in its most original form seen over 30 years ago. Available now at select Converse dealers and through Black Fives.
The Converse 100th Anniversary in 2008 has brought a series of new reinterpreted designs from the century old shoe maker. Over the next few months, some of their marquee as well as lesser known styles will be released under new looks and styles. The Weapon Youth Shin Hi is a tribute to the 1986 released NBA favorite Converse Weapon with differences seen in the addition of the Velcro strap. Two color combinations are seen here and currently available at Mita.
Mastermind Japan will be taking this years ward for the most collaborations. Although I don’t believe anyone is complaining, the company has set a blistering pace this season. This time, they’ve teamed up with Jack Purcell and Beams. The Jack Purcell shoe has been the forefront of many trends over the years and with this pair limited to 1800, the company hopes to duplicate there previous success.

The memo’s been leaked that outside a D-Wade signature, Chuck Taylor and Purcell, there are actually other shoes in Converse’s line up. When you’ve been around for an era that spans the triple digits, Converse is putting their best foot forward with some classy releases. Three models of the One Star Ox seen include the CR (Croc) Ox, regular One Star Ox and V-3 Ox. Check local Converse stockists next month for availability.
