Summary

The Gilded Age returns for an eight-episode fourth season, with the Russell family facing the fallout of Bertha’s social ascent

City of God: The Fight Rages On picks up its second season as rival factions battle for control after a drug lord’s death

New documentaries from Dawn Porter, Ben Proudfoot and Rachel Fleit arrive alongside a deep bench of holiday classics

HBO Max opens its November lineup with The Gilded Age Season 4, bringing Julian Fellowes’ Gilded Age New York saga back for eight new episodes. The premiere lands November 1, kicking off a month that also delivers a second season of City of God: The Fight Rages On, four new HBO Original documentaries and A24’s Tony.

Season 4 finds the Russells dealing with the price of Bertha’s hard-won place at the top of New York Society. Agnes van Rhijn spots a chance to claw back her own standing, Marian sets off in a new direction, and Peggy tries to earn the approval of the family she’s about to marry into. Carrie Coon, Christine Baranski, Cynthia Nixon, Morgan Spector, Louisa Jacobson, Denée Benton and Audra McDonald lead a sprawling ensemble that also features Bill Camp and Phylicia Rashad. Salli Richardson-Whitfield directs and executive produces, with episodes rolling out weekly on Sundays and a companion season of The Gilded Age Podcast arriving the same day.

The drama shifts from ballrooms to the favelas on November 8, when City of God: The Fight Rages On returns for six episodes shot across Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. With drug lord Curió dead, a violent scramble for the territory takes hold. Councilwoman Berenice (Roberta Rodrigues) squares off against corruption and an expanding militia, lawyer Jerusa (Andréia Horta) pursues the people who tore her family apart, and Leka (Luellem de Castro) rallies the neighborhood through funk music and dance parties. Aly Muritiba directs, while Fernando Meirelles and Andrea Barata Ribeiro produce.

Documentaries carry the back half of the month. Dawn Porter’s When a Witness Recants (November 17), executive produced by Ta-Nehisi Coates, revisits the 1983 killing of a 14-year-old at a Baltimore junior high, a case that sent three innocent teenagers to prison for life before witnesses later admitted they had been pressured into lying on the stand. The Hotline (November 18) from Ricki Stern and Jesse Sweet goes inside Never Use Alone, a volunteer-run overdose prevention line that stays on the phone with people using opioids and calls EMS if they stop responding. Ben Proudfoot’s The Buffalo Miracle (November 24), with Josh Allen among its executive producers, follows strangers who rode out a historic Buffalo blizzard inside a McDonald’s that kept its doors open. Rounding out the slate, Rachel Fleit’s The Slightest Touch (November 25) tracks Emma Fogarty, who lives with the rare skin condition Epidermolysis Bullosa, as she marks her 40th birthday by taking on the Dublin Marathon with longtime friend Colin Farrell.

A24’s Tony lands November 20 with Dominic Sessa as a 19-year-old Anthony Bourdain, whose summer in a chaotic Provincetown restaurant kitchen sets the course of his life. Matt Johnson directs a cast that includes Emilia Jones, Leo Woodall and Antonio Banderas, while The Magic Faraway Tree follows on November 27.

The library side leans hard into the season. November 1 brings Elf, The Polar Express, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and Studio Ghibli’s Calcifer Yule Log, plus a sci-fi double bill of David Lynch’s Dune and Jodorowsky’s Dune. The modern Planet of the Apes run follows on November 2, Madame Web drops November 14, and The Detour with David Chang arrives November 16. Further HBO Originals including Clangold, Silent Night, The Art of Deception and The Linares Files are scattered across the calendar.
