Higher Ground and Breakwater Studios have partnered with streaming creator IShowSpeed to bring the acclaimed documentary The Eyes of Ghana to cinemas. The collaboration marks the very first project produced by IShowSpeed, who joins Oscar-winning director Ben Proudfoot to deliver the historical film to a broader global audience.
Directed by Ben Proudfoot, The Eyes of Ghana debuted at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. The film centers on 93-year-old Ghanaian cinematographer Chris Hesse as he races against failing eyesight to rescue and restore more than 1,000 reels documenting Africa’s independence movements across the 1950s and 1960s. The archival footage remained hidden for decades following the 1966 coup that ousted Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president.
“It is a great honor to be part of ‘The Eyes of Ghana’ and help bring this extraordinary piece of history to the big screen. I felt a profound connection to Ghana when I visited this year, and learning about Chris Hesse’s work deepened my understanding of the country and its people,” said IShowSpeed. “His camera captured the birth of African independence, and his determination to preserve those images has ensured that future generations can witness it for themselves. I’m humbled by his legacy and proud to help bring his story to my community.”
Alongside IShowSpeed, the documentary is produced by Proudfoot, Nana Adwoa Frimpong, Moses Bwayo, Anita Afonu, Brandon Somerhalder, Ethan Lewis, and Vinnie Malhotra, with executive production by Barack and Michelle Obama.
The Eyes of Ghana screens for a one-night-only theatrical event on October 28, 2026, across AMC, Regal, Cinemark, and select independent cinemas, with ticketing live via TheEyesOfGhana.com.
