‘Grand Theft Auto VI’ Rebuilds Its Open World Around Consequences, Reactive NPCs, and Shifting Bodies

Rockstar confirms a fluid Jason-and-Lucia switching system, working social feeds, and character models that change with how you play.

Rockstar Games has detailed some of Grand Theft Auto VI‘s core gameplay systems, laying out a version of its open world that reacts to players more closely than any entry before it. Speaking with Dazed, senior Rockstar developers confirmed a grounded, consequence-driven take on Leonida built around lifelike NPCs, bodies that change over time, a fluid two-character control scheme, and functioning social media.

The foundational shift is reactivity. Where past games let players move through the map largely unchecked, GTA VI attaches consequences to how you behave in public. Walking down the street openly carrying a rifle, for instance, will prompt the surrounding world to respond rather than ignore you. That change reframes the series’ usual free-roam anarchy as something the city now pushes back against.

Populating that world is a far more varied cast of NPCs. Rockstar has built its background characters to differ in age, height, and body type, and to carry details such as tattoos, piercings, evidence of plastic surgery, and distinct fashion choices. Their look is also tied to where they live, so the residents of Vice City’s Little Cuba present differently from the people encountered out around the wilderness of Mount Kalaga National Park. The studio frames the goal as authenticity built from how a character looks, moves, and interacts rather than appearance alone.

The protagonists change too, through an expansion of the body-transformation systems introduced in Red Dead Redemption 2. Food affects Jason and Lucia’s weight, exercise visibly builds and tones their muscles, and long stretches spent away from bed, whether hiding from police or riding out a multi-day bender, register on their faces. In practice, habits that used to sit in a menu as invisible statistics now show up directly on the characters, with haircuts, outfits, fitness, food, and sleep all feeding into how the pair appear. As head of development and co-studio head Rob Nelson put it, “We want to enable as much self-expression as possible, without losing the essence of the characters.”

Control moves fluidly between the two leads. Players can send Jason and Lucia off independently or run them together, switching between them during missions and free roam. Rockstar’s own example has Jason driving a highway stretch while Lucia works the in-game phone from the passenger seat; when a police chase kicks off, players can move between taking the wheel and firing on pursuers through the window. Shared actions, like riding a jet ski together, carry animations that reflect the couple’s relationship, and Rockstar says player choices involving the pair can land with heavier consequences than its earlier morality or Honor systems. Nelson framed the intent around investment in the characters themselves: “The thing we love about this medium is the way these characters aren’t empty avatars that you can do whatever you want with… Their story becomes a journey you share with them.”

Social media threads through all of it. Players can browse working feeds on the in-game phone, and the rise of rap duo Real Dimez plays out through viral posts over the course of the game.

The realism is backed by an unusually large production. Rockstar’s development team has more than doubled since Red Dead Redemption 2, and one Los Angeles branch is devoted almost entirely to NPCs. More than 50 real street artists created in-game murals, and actual race-car drivers helped develop the vehicle handling, all of it feeding the denser, more responsive Leonida the studio is aiming for.
