Summary

  • Rory McIlroy successfully defended his title at Augusta National to become the first golfer to win back-to-back Masters championships since Tiger Woods in 2002
  • The Northern Irishman finished at 12-under 276 for a one-stroke victory over world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler after reclaiming the lead on the back nine
  • McIlroy joined Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Woods as the only players in tournament history to repeat as champion while securing his sixth career major title

Rory McIlroy etched his name into Augusta National lore by successfully defending his Masters title, finishing at 12-under overall. Closing out a spectacular Sunday with a 1-under final round, the Northern Irishman captured his sixth major championship and cemented a back-to-back run not seen since Tiger Woods accomplished the feat in 2002. Rory McIlroy navigated a roller-coaster weekend, surrendering a massive early lead before turning the tide during the final stretch. Despite an early double-bogey on the fourth hole that briefly derailed his momentum, he seized control at Amen Corner by carding crucial birdies on the 12th and 13th holes to build a late cushion.

Scottie Scheffler applied immense pressure throughout the afternoon, finishing in solo second at 11-under after delivering a 4-under 68 in the fourth round. Completing an exceptionally clean push to the finish line, the world No. 1 forced McIlroy to earn every inch of the historic victory. Further down the leaderboard, a chaotic battle for third place unfolded. Justin Rose, who held a two-shot lead at the turn, faltered with bogeys on the 11th and 12th holes, dropping to a final score of 10-under after shooting a 2-under 70 for the day.

Joining Rose in the four-way tie for third were Cameron Young, Russell Henley, and Tyrrell Hatton. Hatton engineered an aggressive late charge, shooting a stunning 6-under in the final round to vault up the standings. Meanwhile, Young carded a 1-over on Sunday, unable to maintain his earlier blistering pace, while Henley secured his position with a steady 4-under finish. Rounding out the top ten, Collin Morikawa and Sam Burns tied for seventh at 9-under. Max Homa and Xander Schauffele split ninth place at 8-under, fueled by Homa firing an impressive 5-under closing round. The depth of the field underscored the monumental nature of the champion’s feat, as retaining the green jacket against a surging pack required unparalleled mental fortitude.
