Keith Haring’s Rare Art Cars to Land in NYC's West Village
Launching at CART Department’s “Free Parking” space with the release of the new ‘Keith Haring in 3D’ monograph.
Summary
- Keith Haring’s painted 1963 Buick Special and 1983 Land Rover Defender will be exhibited together by CART Department
- The exhibition marks the official launch of Keith Haring in 3D, a new book from Monacelli
Keith Haring’s career started on the subway, but some of his most legendary “canvases” actually had engines. In a major full-circle moment for New York, two of his rarest 3D works are landing in the West Village this month. Opening April 10, Keith Haring: On the Street marks the first time his painted 1963 Buick Special and 1983 Land Rover Defender will be shown together in Manhattan. The show is the first ever for Free Parking, a new 3,000-square-foot gallery by CART Department tucked inside a 19th-century carriage house.
The exhibition also serves as the launch for Keith Haring in 3D, a massive new book published by Monacelli (Phaidon) dedicated to his three-dimensional work. While the project is tied to a massive survey opening June 6 at Crystal Bridges, this NYC residency is the first time the public can get up close to the cars that inspired the research. Throughout the week, the space will host storytelling sessions with Haring’s inner circle, including Carlo McCormick and Muna Tseng plus a dance party DJ’ed by G-Bo The Pro.
This feels like a perfect “Haring week” in the city. The showcase lands right while the Brant Foundation is surveying his early years just a few blocks over in the East Village, and seeing these cars alongside that history really hits home how his work was never meant to sit still in a museum.
The setup at 16 Morton Street is basically built for this. With the old-school architecture and those huge garage doors, the space feels more like a bridge between the sidewalk and the gallery than a typical white cube. Whether you’re stopping in for the talks with Eric Shiner, Marka27, Brad Gooch and Larry Warsh or just want to see the Buick’s lines in person, it’s a rare chance to catch these pieces before they head back into a secret warehouse.
Keith Haring: On the Street runs from April 10 to April 19 at 16 Morton St, New York.
