Summary

  • Pérez Art Museum Miami is hosting a major exhibition, titled Get in the Game: Sports, Art, Culture, tracing the link between athletics and art
  • The Miami Design District presents Sunset Flip, a two-person painting showcase by artists and pro wrestlers Thekla Kaischauri and Lee Moriarity

They might not be the first perfect pairing that comes to mind, but art and athletics go way back (let’s not forget that at one point art making was an Olympic sport). With the ongoing Open, F1 Grand Prix and FIFA World Cup heating up in Miami, the city’s art institutions are chiming in with two concurrent shows exploring the link between sports and creativity.

The Pérez Art Museum Miami sets the tone with Get in the Game, running through the end of the summer. Featuring over 100 works and artifacts from Virgil Abloh, Derek Fordjour, Julie Mehretu, Paul Pfeiffer, Hank Willis Thomas and more, the exhibition examines the imprint that sport has left on culture, be it through fast-paced Nascar races, neighborhood pickup games or key points in history.

Meanwhile, up north, the Miami Design District hosts on Sunset Flip, a duet painting showcase by artists and pro wrestlers Thekla Kaischauri (All Elite Wrestling Women’s World Champion,) and Lee Moriarity (Ring of Honor Pure Champion.) Curated by Cultural Counsel’s Adam Abdalla alongside gallerist Nina Johnson, the show bridges the gap between art and wrestling by moments in and out of the ring. The 10 works on view move through arcs of triumph, defeat, sportsmanship and meditative in-betweens, pairing Kaischauri and Moriarity’s distinct figurative styles.

Both exhibitions are now up in Miami. Check out PAMM’s website for more on the art-sport crossovers unfolding around the city.
