Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk is officially expanding his partnership with Netflix through a newly greenlit drama series titled The Dealer. Following the massive global success of his survival-game franchise, Hwang will serve as executive producer on the upcoming project, which shifts the lens from deadly children’s games to the treacherous landscape of professional gambling and white-collar fraud.
The Dealer centers on Geonhwa, portrayed by Jung So-min, a highly skilled casino dealer whose life takes a drastic turn on the eve of her wedding. After losing her savings to a predatory housing scam, Geonhwa is forced to return to the high-stakes gambling world she once abandoned. The narrative explores her descent into an underground realm where she must utilize long-suppressed talents to navigate systemic corruption and reclaim her agency.
Directed by Choi Young-hwan and written by Ohnooy and Lee Tae-young, the production marks a significant pivot for Hwang as he moves into a producing role following the physical and mental toll of directing every episode of Squid Game. The series is bolstered by a heavy-hitting supporting cast that includes Ryoo Seung-bum, Lee Soo-hyuk, and Ryu Kyung-soo. While the project maintains Hwang’s signature interest in socio-economic struggles and the “psychology of extreme situations,” it trades the literal violence of the arena for the psychological tension of the gambling table.
