Summary

  • Ford is officially discontinuing the fully-electric F-150 Lightning at the end of 2025, taking a massive $19.5 billion USD write-down

  • The automaker is shifting its focus toward Extended-Range Electric Vehicles (EREV), with a next-generation hybrid Lightning

  • This strategic pivot follows $13 billion USD in losses within Ford’s EV division since 2023, driven by high production costs

In a seismic shift for the American automotive landscape, Ford Motor Co. has officially announced the cancellation of the fully-electric F-150 Lightning. The decision, confirmed on December 15, 2025, marks a dramatic retreat from the company’s once-ambitious battery-electric vehicle (BEV) targets as it grapples with mounting financial losses and cooling consumer demand.

The automaker revealed it will take a massive $19.5 billion USD write-down related to its EV business, acknowledging that the “operating reality has changed.” Since 2023, Ford has lost an estimated $13 billion USD on electric vehicles, with per-vehicle losses exceeding $50,000 USD. CEO Jim Farley described the move as a “customer-driven shift,” pivoting capital toward higher-return opportunities in hybrids and gas-powered trucks.

While the pure EV version of the Lightning is dead, the nameplate will survive as an Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (EREV). This next-generation hybrid model will utilize electric motors for propulsion but feature an on-board gasoline generator to recharge the battery, targeting a range of over 700 miles and better towing performance.

Ford’s restructuring also includes renaming its Tennessee Electric Vehicle Center to the Tennessee Truck Plant, which will now produce affordable gas-powered pickups instead of next-gen EVs. Despite this retreat, Ford isn’t abandoning electricity entirely; the company is shifting its pure EV focus toward a new “Universal EV Platform” for smaller, more affordable models, starting with a midsize pickup slated for 2027.
