Tadao Ando Unveils Plans for Floating Art Museum in Dubai

Japanese architect Tadao Ando has announced plans for a new art museum in Dubai, seemingly afloat in the emirate’s saltwater creek.
Inspired by the elements — water, sky, wind and light — recent renderings of the five-story Dubai Museum of Art (DUMA) see curved white walls punctuated by triangular apertures tapering upwards. By sunset, the museum’s surface reflects the shifting hues of the desert sky, while softening sharp edges, giving the structure a more rounded, atmospheric feel.
The interior, graced by Ando’s signature minimalist touch, is anchored by spatial poetry and precision, an interplay dance of concrete and light. The galleries on the first two floors revolve around a central oculus, which illuminates walking paths with a soft, pearlescent glow. The upper levels will feature a restaurant, cafe and lounge, framed by full-height glazing, offering panoramic views of the city skyline across the water.
In addition to showcasing contemporary artworks by a range of established and emerging names, the museum will house a library, study areas and educational resources dedicated to supporting young artists.
While opening dates have yet to be announced, the project, led by the Al Futtaim Group, positions itself as “more than an architectural landmark,” but a “a cultural statement that reflects Dubai’s openness to creativity and affirms its role in connecting cultures and celebrating talent from around the world,” the group’s CEO, Omar Al Futtaim, said in a recent statement.
“In Dubai, his vision for the Museum of Art will stand as a serene dialogue between nature, water and the human spirit, a masterpiece of restraint and emotion that embodies both ingenuity and timeless elegance, perfectly capturing the depth of his philosophy,” he continued.
