Nicole McLaughlin and Vans Fuse Retro Hiking Details Into the Slip-On RS
Following up on their reimagined Slip-On from 2023, the new pair is showcased with enhanced cargo and two versatile colorways.
Vans and designer Nicole McLaughlin have reunited for a second collaboration, taking the upcycling expert’s utilitarian sensibilities to new heights. Adding additional tactical components and building upon the Slip-On RS with matching accessories, McLaughlin offers an unconventional yet functional take on the shoe brand’s classic silhouette.
Mirroring the design language of traditional trekking backpacks, the design is centered on a roomy cargo pouch over the toe box and adjustable nylon straps. The playful campaign highlights the miniaturized details of the design with additional tiny objects, including a miniature version of McLaughlin’s studio and an array of hiking gear.
On her latest Vans creation, McLaughlin said “Creating pieces that can be multi-purpose, but also fun has always been my goal. I was inspired by vintage hiking packs from the ‘70s and the aesthetic of outdoor gear from that era for the collection,” in an official statement.
Beyond aesthetic inspiration, the Slip-On RS lives up to its hiking-inspired sensibilities with uppers comprised of 40% recycled canvas treated with water-resistant PFC-free DWR and a lugged tread pattern on the outsoles guaranteeing multi-surface traction. The pair is offered in a monochromatic natural canvas colorway and a duo-tone charcoal colorway with black trims and details. Each model showcases vintage co-branded details including a Vans N.M. Rucksack patch above the storage pouch and wordmarks printed on the insoles. Extending the functional aspects into the accessories, the collection also offers ankle socks with patch pockets and a utilitarian Rucksack that doubles as a climbing chalk bag.
Known for her resourceful approach to repurposing garments and whimsical design details, McLaughlin’s new Slip-On RS builds upon the designer’s growing roster of shoe collaborations. McLaughlin first collaborated with Vans on a comparatively pared-back Slip-On VP VR3 LX in 2023 and has since released collaborative shoes with Merrell, HOKA, and more recently, PUMA. The designer has also produced many DIY one-offs including a jacket made of PUMA goalkeeper gloves and a stool made with discarded JanSport packs.
The latest Vans x Nicole McLaughlin collection will be released on Nicole McLaughlin’s web store on Wednesday, February 26. On February 27, the collection will arrive on the Vans web store and select locations.
