Deriving from its MC20 halo project, Maserati’s GT2 Stradale began life as a blueprint that merged the race-ready performance of its sister sportscar with the comfort of long-distance vehicles. Though it was an ambitious design, the model went on to become the brand’s most powerful road-legal car when it entered the market last August.

Fast forward to six months later and the GT2 Stradale has touched down on Spain’s Andalusian coast in all its shining colorways. Lined up under the shade of nearby olive trees, the cars were brought in by Maserati for a multi-day on-road driving experience that invited a group of petrolheads to get behind the wheel in a rare first-hand look. With a plan to drive from the mountainside tracks to Circuito Ascari, Hypebeast followed the journey in a new Day in the Life, showcasing how the world of racing has been made for the road.

After spending an evening soaking up the Marbella vista which would soon be their racetrack, the experience began promptly the next morning with an all-you-need-to-know debrief. Once the technicals were down, each driver stepped through the butterfly doors of their dedicated GT2 Stradale cars and headed off into the staggering heights of Ronda. As they went from the town center to the more rugged countryside roads, the four drive modes powered by the fine-tuned Nettuno V6 engine ensured a safe yet thrilling ride that put its street capabilities to the test.

The procession of cars then reached the recently opened La Almazara oil mill – an architectural masterpiece designed by Philippe Starck – where the group fuelled up on lunch, before hitting the road again to Circuito Ascari. Raring to gear up the action, the drivers parked the cars and made their way inside where they were welcomed by Maserati head of design Klaus Busse. In an intimate talk about the Trident’s personalization program Fuoriserie, Busse talked through the process behind the car’s creation. “At Maserati, we understand how cars work so there’s a fundamental respect for what the engineers are asking and what we believe the car needs to make it even better performing,” he shared. “The MC20 is a clean slate canvas that you can add these purposeful aerodynamic elements and you will never be on the wrong side of what looks right.”

Later, Busse also addressed the subject of inner-city driving which was heavily discussed in the design stages. “You need to be mindful of the current society. There are places where the role of a supercar in the inner city is debated so that was one of the reasons for us to create this rolling sculpture, not something that is too aggressive.” Getting a feel for its adaptable nature, the drivers stepped back inside their cars, where under the watchful eye of professionals, they each aimed to hit the 0-62 mph reach in 2.8 seconds on the racetrack, engaging the Corsa Drive Mode on the way.

High on adrenaline, the drivers rejoined Busse and Maserati product manager Andrea Simonetti for small plates of Spanish tapas that matched the luxury of the driving experience in culinary form. At the table, Busse shared with Hypebeast, “Whether it was the countryside drive or enjoying good company and good food, we want everyone to enjoy and connect with what’s around us. What we do at Maserati is we try to connect people through beauty. Cars in general can be something that connects people, but beautiful cars even more so.”
