Following a $20 million renovation and expansion that links its three neighboring buildings on West 22nd Street, the revamped Dia Chelsea is slated to reopen in April 2021. The ambitious project has been helmed by the Architecture Research Offices with the forthcoming establishment to span 32,500 square feet of space behind a single facade.

The institution also extended Joseph Beuys’ 7000 Eichen with an increased number of paired basalt columns and living oak trees. The work first made in 1982 that is situated on the street which Dia Chelsea is located.

The Chelsea expansion is part of a wider $90 million effort that will additionally consist of Dia Soho — a brand new 2,500 square foot exhibition space on Wooster Street; the restoration of two Walter De Maria installations, The Broken Kilometer, 1979, and The New York Earth Room, 1977; and the expansion and renovation of the lower level and grounds of Dia Beacon, north of New York City.

Two commissioned works by Lucy Raven will inaugurate the new Chelsea space. The works’ debut was originally slated for September 2020, but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In her practice, Raven explores the violence of development in the American West. Head over to Dia Art Foundation’s website to learn more about its upcoming projects.
