Offered as two separate lots expected to fetch up to $2 million USD combined, the sale features an adult and a juvenile specimen of Maiasaura peeblesorum, the duck-billed herbivore species celebrated for revealing the first scientific evidence of dinosaur parental care.
Excavated from the Linster Quarry within Montana’s Two Medicine Formation, the Late Cretaceous pair represents two distinct developmental stages of the same species. “Koda,” the adult composite mount, measures 20.7 feet long and 8.5 feet tall, composed of 68% original fossil bone by count and estimated between $900,000 and $1,200,000 USD. “Hank,” the juvenile composite mount, stands 6.3 feet tall and 13 feet long, containing 62% original fossil material with an estimate between $600,000 and $800,000 USD.
Prepared under the scientific direction of Dr. Frédéric Lacombat, both mounts incorporate 3D-printed and epoxy resin components in areas where original fossil bone was absent. Displayed side by side, the specimens demonstrate significant shifts in skull development, body proportions, and movement mechanics as the species matured, providing a rare physical representation of prehistoric family life.
