Summary

Porsche firmly denied reports of a planned 2030 discontinuation for the Taycan and stated there are no plans to scrap the electric sedan in the short term

The automaker is streamlining the model range to reduce production complexity following a significant sales drop from a 2023 peak of 40,629 units to 16,339 in 2025

Stuttgart is adjusting its broader electrification targets and reintroducing combustion engine options for upcoming models in response to cooling demand for luxury electric vehicles

Porsche executives are aggressively changing the narrative after rumors suggested the brand would kill off its flagship electric vehicle. German business publication WirtschaftsWoche recently sent shockwaves through the automotive sphere by reporting that the automaker and its works council had quietly agreed to phase out the model by the end of the decade. Company CEO Michael Leiters clarified the brand’s stance to international media this week. He emphasized that an ongoing effort to simplify production does not equate to a death sentence for the entire model line.

The core issue driving the speculation is a massive sales decline across the luxury electric vehicle sector. Taycan deliveries have taken a major hit over the last two years. The model dropped from a peak of 40,629 units in 2023 down to just 16,339 in 2025. The bleeding continued into the first half of 2026 with only 6,219 units shipped globally. In response to the cooling demand, Leiters noted that the company is actively reducing the number of available variants to lower complexity and manage overhead.

This stark drop in consumer appetite is driven by a convergence of global market pressures. Domestic manufacturers in China are currently undercutting legacy European brands with cheaper high-performance alternatives. This new wave of competition is stripping away some of the traditional cachet associated with the Stuttgart crest. Meanwhile higher import tariffs and shifting consumer sentiment in the United States have further stifled the electric sedan’s momentum.

The uncertain long-term fate of the Taycan reflects a much wider reality check inside the boardroom. The automaker is openly recalibrating its initial electrification targets and walking back promises of an EV-only future for highly anticipated platforms. Future iterations of the 718 Cayman and Boxster models will now be offered with combustion engines. Industry insiders suggest it might make more financial sense for the company to eventually introduce an all-electric Panamera rather than invest in a ground-up second generation for its current electric trailblazer.
