This leaves a “true Friday” intake of $10.2 million USD from general audiences. Because of this front-loaded behavior, box office analysts have lowered the film’s three-day opening weekend forecast down to the $38 million to $41 million USD  range—a sharp decline from the $50 million USD -plus frame expected earlier in the month.

The soft launch places immediate pressure on the commercial future of the newly rebooted DC Universe (DCU) spearheaded by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Serving as the second major theatrical anchor of the reset slate, Supergirl is tracking significantly behind its predecessor, Superman, which captured a massive $125 million domestic debut last year. Armed with a net production budget estimated between $170 million and $185 million before marketing, the film faces a uphill battle to cross its estimated $430 million global break-even point. Early audience metrics indicate mixed word-of-mouth, with the film securing a B- CinemaScore and a 76% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Exacerbating Supergirl’s box office friction is the historic hold of Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5. In its second weekend, the animated titan is continuing a dominant box office run, pacing toward a massive $70 million to $80 million USD second-frame haul. The relentless family traffic is actively capping Supergirl’s theatrical footprint, though the film holds out hope for strong overseas legs where it managed a modest $11.1 million USD international start through Thursday.
