This 1,117-Piece LEGO IDEAS Tribute Honors Pablo Picasso’s Cubist Legacy
Utilizing rigorous geometric ratios, this fan-made project translates Picasso’s fragmented 1953 artwork into a sophisticated, display-ready LEGO portrait.
Summary
- The proposed fan-made project replicates a 1953 artwork using exactly 1,117 pieces
- Builders utilize specific geometric ratios to achieve sturdy slanted lines without finicky swivel blocks
- The display-ready model includes an optional grey frame alongside an exclusive artist minifigure
Pablo Picasso is being honored as he latest entry into LEGO IDEAS platform with the “Pablo Picasso Cubism Art: Great Painter Face” set concept, stripping away standard brick-building limitations in favor of rigorous mathematics. Translating the fragmented, multi-perspective aesthetic of the 1953 artwork into plastic blocks, the proposed build fundamentally challenges the traditional vertical and horizontal grid of standard studs.
Measuring 10.7 inches wide, 15.75 inches tall, and roughly two inches thick, the 1,117-piece conceptual model is built for versatile display. Builders can opt to construct the piece with or without a grey border frame, allowing it to hang directly on a wall or stand freely on a desk. The background is achieved by stacking slanted-angle plates in bold, vivid tones, complementing the expressive nature of the source material.
The core technical achievement of the MOC (My Own Creation) lies in its structural integrity. Mimicking the non-linear shifts of the painting’s face, hair, and shirt required slopes that pushed past the limitations of standard angled plates. Rather than relying on ratchet-swivel bricks — which only connect on one side and leave the build unsecured — the creator applied the Pythagorean theorem. By structuring perpendicular right triangles with perfect stud integer counts (utilizing 4 and 3 to yield a 5-stud diagonal slope, or 12 and 5 to yield a 13-stud slope), the slanted geometric lines are fully supported at two endpoints. This mathematical approach guarantees a rigid, secure build while remaining faithful to the abstract subject matter.
Accompanying the primary portrait is a 12×4 stud black baseplate hosting an exclusive minifigure of the artist. The figure is outfitted in a blue shirt and a paint-splattered gray jumper, equipped with a wood brush carrying wet orange paint and a white mixing plate. The miniature setup is completed by a brick-built easel board stand, which features the only printed element in the entire set: a micro-canvas of the original “Great Painter Face.”
