Hong Kong’s circular design studio reEDIT by EDITECTURE, led by Jacqueline Chak and Genevieve Chew, made its European debut during Milan Design Week 2026 with “The Upcycled Gambit — Bamboo & Brew Chess Table Set.” Presented within the Isola Design District’s No Space for Waste exhibition, the installation reimagines the traditional Chinese chess table as a cultural artifact infused with Hong Kong’s everyday rituals. Each move across the board carries the weight of the city’s collective memory, while the materials – bamboo scaffolding and tea waste – embody the spirit of second life through upcycling.

The chess table draws inspiration from Hong Kong’s enduring public culture, where games are played on weathered marble benches in local parks, often surrounded by silent spectators. reEDIT translates this communal practice into a sculptural design that merges heritage with sustainability. The surface incorporates tea leaves collected from Hong Kong’s iconic milk tea tradition, while bamboo references the century‑old craft of scaffolding that continues to shape the city’s vertical landscape. Together, these elements create a tactile narrative that connects local identity with global design innovation.

Beyond cultural storytelling, the installation showcases reEDIT’s technical expertise in circular design. The studio’s vertically integrated workflow spans waste collection, sorting, and advanced material processing, including RPET 3D printing and sheet‑pressing techniques.
