The casting, which raised eyebrows when it emerged, turns out to be one of the most considered decisions in a film that has been quietly reshaping expectations since its trailer dropped.

Nolan’s argument is straightforward. Homer’s Odyssey wasn’t written — it was performed, passed between poets and audiences across generations before anyone transcribed it. The text that survives is the residue of a living oral tradition, rhythmic and repetitive by design, built to be memorised and recited rather than read. Nolan’s point, as relayed during his TIME interview, is that rap operates on the same structural logic: “I cast him because I wanted to nod towards the idea that this story has been handed down as oral poetry, which is analogous to rap.” 

The film’s sonic architecture follows the same thinking. Ludwig Göransson, who has scored every Nolan film since Tenet, built the Odyssey score not around an orchestra but around 35 gongs of varying size, recorded alongside synthesisers to create something that sits outside any recognisable historical period. “It’s not like the orchestra existed back then,” Göransson noted, describing the constraint as both a challenge and an opening. The most striking detail is a suggestion that came from Nolan himself: the sound of Odysseus’ lyre rendered as the pluck of his bow string, collapsing the film’s two central symbols — art and violence, the poet and the warrior — into a single sonic gesture. 

Together, the La Flame casting and the Göransson score point toward a film less interested in period authenticity than in cultural translation. Nolan has spoken publicly about the gap in cinema history that The Odyssey fills, noting that a large-scale Hollywood adaptation of Homer’s source material had never been attempted despite the story’s obvious cinematic potential. His solution is not to reconstruct ancient Greece but to find the living equivalents of its storytelling forms and build the film around them. Scott’s presence onscreen and Göransson’s gongs in the mix are two expressions of the same instinct: the oldest story in Western literature deserves a treatment that takes its aliveness seriously rather than embalming it in prestige.
