Kiko Kostadinov is tapping into the tabi shoe sneaker with its very own split-toe sneaker silhouette. Created in collaboration with ASICS, the ILARGI FF model represents a boundary-pushing evolution in the long-standing partnership between the Bulgarian designer and the Japanese athletics giant.
Drawing heavy inspiration from the functional geometry of traditional Japanese tabi work boots and ASICS’ own archival marathon shoes from the 1950s, the ILARGI FF is defined by its iconic split-toe construction. The upper is characterized by a lightweight, technical build that prioritizes a streamlined silhouette, featuring a sleek interplay of textures across the quarters and toe box. A refined lacing system integrates seamlessly into the minimalist tongue, maintaining a low-profile aesthetic that emphasizes the shoe’s unique structural split.
Underfoot, the ILARGI FF is equipped with ASICS’ FlyteFoam midsole technology, ensuring cushioned steps and responsive comfort for both casual wear and performance runs. A sculpted outsole enhances traction and stability, complementing the tabi design’s unique fit. The sneaker balances fashion and function, embodying Kostadinov’s experimental approach while leveraging ASICS’ technical expertise.
The accompanying campaign, titled BUCKLE YUP: CUE SHOES, serves as the first act of a surrealist, episodic series directed by American artist Ryan Trecartin. Filmed across more than a dozen locations in Tokyo and Okinawa, the visuals feature a local cast of fifteen actors navigating a “glossy yet uncanny” world that blends the aesthetics of teen musicals with commercial pop tropes. Trecartin, granted full creative control, utilizes machine learning software to produce an artificial chorus of voices for the score, crafting an abstract narrative centered around delivery girls and online side-hustles. This ambitious collaboration pushes against traditional brand-artist partnerships, opting for a highly experimental format that reflects the innovative, split-toe spirit of the ILARGI FF itself.
The model has been released in advance through the Kiko Kostadinov London store, with a wider global release slated for February 23 through the brand’s webstore, as well as flagship locations across LA and Tokyo.
