Jagex announced an animated RuneScape series at its annual RuneFest event, created with YouTuber Charlie "MoistCr1TiKaL" White

Lyrical Animation, which is also adapting White's graphic novel Godslap, will produce the show

The project marks the MMO's 25th anniversary, though development is still early and further details are set for 2027

Jagex is bringing RuneScape to animation, announcing a series based on its long-running MMO during this weekend’s RuneFest. The UK studio is developing the show with Charlie “MoistCr1TiKaL” White, one of YouTube’s most-watched personalities, while Lyrical Animation takes on production. The reveal lands in the game’s 25th anniversary year, giving one of the internet’s oldest online worlds its first move into episodic storytelling.

White’s involvement draws on a résumé that now reaches well beyond his channel. He has voice credits in the games Dispatch and Mewgenics. He’s also writing and producing an animated film based on Godslap, the graphic novel he co-created with Stephanie Phillips and Ricardo Jaime. RuneScape will be his second animated project with the same studio, following that adaptation.

That studio is Lyrical Animation, and it has built a full slate of game and comics adaptations. Beyond Godslap and now RuneScape, Lyrical is co-producing two animated films: Death Stranding: Mosquito and Bloodborne. The latter, announced earlier this year, is produced by Seán “jacksepticeye” McLoughlin, a fellow YouTuber who also co-starred with White in Dispatch. That creator-to-creator connection gives the RuneScape team a working relationship already in place before the first frame is drawn.

The source material is extensive. RuneScape first launched in January 2001 as a browser-based MMO built by brothers Andrew and Paul Gower. It went on to grow into one of the longest-running online games, later splitting into the modern RuneScape and the community-driven Old School RuneScape, which arrived in 2013. Its fantasy world of Gielinor has collected two and a half decades of quests, gods, factions and player-made legends. That gives the series a large archive of history to draw on, along with a fanbase that already knows the setting closely.

Jagex is framing the show as a project for both groups: veterans who grew up in Gielinor and viewers meeting it for the first time. “For 25 years, our players have helped shape RuneScape’s extraordinary world, its characters and its stories,” Jagex CEO Jon Bellamy said. “We see huge potential to bring Gielinor to life in new ways, both for the millions who already know and love it and for a whole new audience. It’s early days, but we’re excited to explore that potential with Charlie and the team at Lyrical Animation, and we wanted our players to be the first to know.”

The series is still at the start of development, with no release window, platform, cast or episode count confirmed. Jagex has promised further updates in 2027. Announcing it now, during the anniversary year and in front of the RuneFest crowd, makes the reveal a celebration for the fans who have kept the game running.

Stay tuned for more details.
