New York’s Yancey Richardson is turning 30, and to celebrate, the gallery presents an exquisite artist-curated group exhibition, handing the reins to the very names who have defined its legacy.

Yancey Richardson first opened the doors to her namesake Soho gallery in 1995 with an inaugural showcase by the legendary Sebastião Salgado. Now based in Chelsea, with over 290 exhibitions under its belt, the gallery has established itself as a force in contemporary photography, launching the careers of its artists, such as Salgado, Zanele Muholi and Mickalene Thomas.

For the anniversary show, titled Celebrating 30 Years, the artists were invited to reflect on creative affinities and curate the works of their peers. Through these pairings — Thomas chosen by David Alekhuogie, Olivo Barbieri by Lynn Saville, Jared Bark by Rachel Perry and Tseng Kwong Chi by Muholi — the exhibition gives the floor to unexpected dialogues and shared sensibilities across styles and generations.

“Since the day we opened our doors in 1995, the gallery has remained committed to supporting and embracing photography across the widest possible spectrum, from modern masters to new and contemporary expressions,” the gallerist expressed. “Though both the medium itself and society’s understanding of it has changed dramatically over the past 30 years, I have endeavored to keep the gallery as a space where those changes—where history itself—can be seen, felt and interacted with.”

She adds: “I wish to thank the artists who have entrusted us with their legacies and whose work continues to challenge us to see and think in different ways, all while offering a constant reminder of the power of art to help us understand the times in which we live.”

The anniversary group exhibition is now on view through August 15.
