Summary

  • The Weeknd’s Hurry Up Tomorrow debuts with $3.3M USD at the box office
  • Poor reviews and buzz hindered the $15M Lionsgate release.
  • The film stars The Weeknd as an insomniac musician in an existential story

The Weeknd‘s Hurry Up Tomorrow failed to crack the top five of the domestic box office charts as it opens with $3.3 million USD from 2,020 cinemas.

As per Variety, the Lionsgate-released film had a budget of $15 million USD but was “[u]nable to overcome terrible reviews and bad buzz.” Hurry Up Tomorrow serves as a companion piece to The Weeknd’s studio album of the same name and sees the artist, Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan star in the lead roles.

Hurry Up Tomorrow serves as the accompanying film to The Weeknd’s album of the same name, and follows him as a fictionalized version of himself. In the film, the artist works as a musician who suffers from insomnia and is on the verge of a mental breakdown. He’s then “pulled into an existential odyssey by a mysterious young fan,” portrayed by Ortega. Trey Edward Shults of Waves directs.

“I always wanted to complete the After Hours and Dawn FM trilogy with something really personal – and then something really personal happened. I lost my voice at SoFi Stadium,” The Weeknd told Hypebeast in an exclusive interview. “I quickly found out that it wasn’t a physical injury, but a psychological situation I had to deal with. My voice has always been my superpower; I’ve been able to perform with a fever, a death in the family, a breakup, anything. It had never really failed me until that moment, when I finally pushed myself past what I was physically able to do. I wanted the audience to feel and see what I was going through subjectively, and I felt an album was enough.”
