Emerging London-based design firm Studio Hagen Hall has unveiled its latest full-scale renovation, with the Pine Heath townhouse located in Hampstead in North London. Originally planned as a light refurbishment, which evolved into a comprehensive reimagination, Studio Hagen Hall’s project restores the mid-century character with warm wooden interiors, emphasizing the original Modernist vision of the building.

In a statement, Director Louis Hagen Hall emphasized the “rich and harmonious dialogue between the existing character and contemporary interventions.” “We were careful to retain the modernist character that makes the house so special, a core theme running through our projects. This approach results in a minimal yet warm and textured interior that seamlessly integrates with its new bespoke furnishings,” he continued.

Part of a late-60s housing development by South African architect Ted Levy of Benjamin & Partners, the house unfolds across five stories and is joined by eight other adjacent townhouses. Throughout, richly-hued wooden built-ins, paneling, and cabinetry play off of the original aged Paraná pine found in the central stairwell.  The studio mimics the highly sought-after endangered wood, closely matching the original stain with the new joinery. In the main living area, olive green wall-to-wall carpeting evokes 50s and 60s interior aesthetics, while a custom upholstered sectional is cast in textured green boucle. Lofted and off-set floor plans create subtle divisions between different spaces for a more intimate spatial experience.

In the kitchen, brushed steel countertops and a beige grid tiled backsplash complement the wooden cabinets with an industrial flair, and mechanical louvre window shutters above the sink provide added privacy from the street. Above, period-inspired stippolyte glass cabinetry brings another dynamic material to the kitchen and helps to delineate the dining area. Elsewhere, tiled bathrooms are drenched in shades of brown, green, and blue to complement the cherry wood found throughout the house.
