Specter Design and Deus Ex Machina Announce Limited Edition Capsule Collection

Specter Design and Deus Ex Machina have launched a limited-edition capsule collection that blends automotive design and fashion, celebrating craftsmanship and artistic sensibilities. This collaboration, based on a shared appreciation for meticulous detail and quality, reflects the natural evolution of their longstanding creative relationship.
Specter Design, founded by artist and designer Tanner Boyes, is renowned for its expertise in metalwork, bodywork, and car customization. Boyes’ background in apparel, shaped by his father’s industry connections, has greatly influenced his unique design approach. His creative philosophy emphasizes evolution and refinement while prioritizing authenticity. “In my creative sphere, the work is evolving in parallel with my own taste and capabilities. At some point, if it becomes clear that developing an idea further is no longer improving it, I typically leave it alone at that moment,” Boyes explains.
The capsule collection features 18 meticulously designed pieces, including t-shirts, outerwear, pants, and accessories. Drawing inspiration from car culture and the aesthetics of the 1960s, the collection showcases a vintage and dead stock sensibility in its styling. Each item is crafted from carefully selected materials, such as wool blends, cotton corduroy, denim, and organic fleece. The collection’s treatments—including heavy enzyme washes, yarn-dyed check fabrics, and all-over printed yardage art—highlight both brands’ commitment to visual artistry and high-quality craftsmanship.
The collection clearly demonstrates both functional and aesthetic considerations. Signature features, including bold embroidery, printed artwork, corozo nut button cuff adjusters, and mother-of-pearl buttons, contribute to a tactile and elevated touch. The Specter Work Pant and Specter Stamp Jacket showcase relaxed fits with a utilitarian appeal. Additionally, the t-shirts and fleece are produced using traditional circular knitting machines, which create a seamless, tubular construction. This old-school method enhances both durability and comfort.
Accessories round out the range with vintage-inspired headwear, including the Specter Cap, a reinterpretation of the classic shallow-fit pillbox cap, and the Specter Tools Bucket Hat, made from satin and cotton for a functional yet style-driven aesthetic.Reflecting on the collaboration, Boyes shares, “I first became an admirer of Deus around 2008. I knew for a long time that I wanted to be involved with the brand in some way, and when the surprising opportunity arose to design a collection together in 2022, it was a no-brainer.”
