A 'Scooby-Doo' Live-Action Series Is Coming to Netflix
Greenlit for a eight episodes so far.
It’s official — Netflix has finally set the development in motion for the upcoming Scooby-Doo live-action series.
The project was initially reported in April 2024 that saw the series have a script-to-series commitment at the streamer. The show is expected to focus on how the Mystery crew with their beloved Great Dane, first teamed up together. According to Variety, Netflix has greenlit eight episodes and will see Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg serve as writers and showrunners. The two will also executive produce with André Nemec and Jeff Pinkner under Midnight Radio and Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Leigh London Redman will executive produce under Berlanti Productions who have an overall deal with WBTV. WBTV has the controlling rights to the Hanna-Barbera characters.
Peter Friedlander, vice president of scripted series for Netflix said in a statement, “Mystery, Inc. is back in business! We’re excited to bring Scooby-Doo to TV as a live-action series for the first time. The beloved franchise has had an impact on pop culture that is undeniable — it’s rich with universal themes of friendship that generations of fans have long embraced. Together with creative powerhouses Berlanti Productions and Midnight Radio, we’re committed to delighting longtime fans and opening up a world of groovy adventures for a new era of meddling kids.” As for the official synopsis of the series, it reads, “During their final summer at camp, old friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder. Together with the pragmatic and scientific townie, Velma, and the strange, but ever so handsome new kid, Freddy, they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.”
This is not the first live-action Scooby-Doo project with the most famous film releasing in 2002 starring Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard, Linda Cardellini and Neil Fanning voicing Scooby. There is no official release date for the series just yet.
