Draga & Aurel to Debut Phebe Pendant Lamps at Milan Design Week
The latest addition to their “Transparency Matters” collection.
Italian design studio Draga & Aurel is preparing to unveil its Phebe pendant lamps during Milan Design Week at the prestigious Rossana Orlandi Gallery. As an innovative addition to their “Transparency Matters” collection, these lamps embody the studio’s ongoing exploration of transparency by blending influences from Minimalism, Space Age design and Optical Art. Inspired by the floating architecture of Mike Kelley’s “Kandor” series, the Phebe lamps transcend conventional lighting by functioning as dynamic entities that actively interact with their surroundings, creating a unique dialogue between light and space.
The name “Phebe” originates from the Greek word for “bright and luminous,” reflecting the lamps’ ethereal presence and the playful, colored glow they emit. Handcrafted in Draga & Aurel’s Como workshop, the lamps feature two adjustable discs that diffuse light at variable intensities. The upper disc, made of Lucite, offers a thin and radiant finish, while the lower disc is composed of epoxy resin layers in diverse colors and shades. This material combination achieves a striking aesthetic inspired by the Space Age — a period defined by bold creativity and futuristic design.
Designed to resemble satellites floating in parallel dimensions, the Phebe pendant lamps merge the real and the imaginary. Their ghostly glow creates a visual and emotional experience, balancing memory with visions of the future. This interplay of transparency and color transforms light into a vibration, inviting users to explore the artistic and expressive potential of illumination. With their versatile, adjustable design, the lamps can adapt to a range of spaces and moods, enhancing their functional and aesthetic appeal.
