Summary

  • Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser revealed the planned Trevor-focused GTA V DLC was half-finished before being canceled
  • Houser said abandoning the DLC allowed Rockstar to prioritize the development of Red Dead Redemption 2
  • The content would have featured Trevor as a “James Bond” secret agent, and Houser expressed interest in developing a future GTA zombie game

The scrapping of the Trever-focused GTA V DLC finally has an explanation thanks to Rockstar Games co-founder and the game’s lead writer Dan Houser.

In a recent appearance on the Lex Fridman Podcast, Houser revealed that the DLC was halfway finished before they pulled the plug. “It never quite came together, and it was never finished. It was about half done when it got abandoned,” he said.

Houser continued, “But I think if that had come out, we probably wouldn’t have gotten to make Red Dead [Redemption] 2. So, there are always compromises.”

Steven Ogg, the actor who brought Trevor to life, previously shared that he actually filmed material for the DLC. He described it as a “James Bond Trevor,” and Houser doubled down on this, “It was one when you played as Trevor, but he was a secret agent. It was cute.”

Houser also stated that he would have loved to create a GTA zombie game, “That would have been funny. I think that could have been quite fun.” He continued, “I like making the stories. For me, I love the model of GTA IV when you had the extra stories coming afterwards, or Red Dead 1 when you had the zombie pack coming afterwards. I like just doing these extra things.”

It remains to be seen whether the highly anticipated GTA VI will receive single-player DLC.
