Georgian-born designer David Koma has officially been named the new creative director of Blumarine. The designer has his own eponymous London-based fashion house which was launched in 2009 following his studies at Central Saint Martins. With his eponymous label, he was known for his striking, sculptural silhouettes that earned him a frequent participant of London Fashion Week from the very beginning.

Taking over the role Walter Chiapponi vacated after one season, Koma is set to bring a new vision and direction to the Italian house. Prior to Chiapponi, who was Tod’s creative director before his role at Blumarine, he was preceded by Nicola Brognano who put Blumarine back on the map with a buzzy Y2K aesthetic. He spent four years at the brand and left in 2023. Chiapponi joined later that year, but left after the Fall/Winter 2024 season in March. Months later, Blumarine has enlisted Koma to take the brand’s creative direction to a new level.

In a statement, Koma said of his new position at the brand, “Blumarine embodies a unique blend of sensuality, timeless glamour and elegance that I always admired, and it is an honour to be able to write the next chapter in the brand’s illustrious history. I am excited to celebrate Blumarine’s rich creative heritage while infusing it with my own modern vision. The brand’s feminine aesthetic deeply resonates with me, making this journey feel incredibly authentic. I am eager to craft collections that inspire and captivate our audience, ushering in an exciting new era of innovation and creativity at this esteemed house.”

Marco Marchi, Sole Director of Exelite, the holding company that owns Blumarine, released his own statement, “David Koma’s aesthetic captured me from the beginning. I am sure that David will be able to interpret Blumarine’s codes to perfection, thanks to his vision and stylistic sensitivity, characterized by an overwhelming femininity.” The Pre-Fall 2025 collection will be Koma’s first for the house.
