George R. R. Martin Unsure if He Will Finish 'Game of Thrones' Books
Specifically the ‘Song of Ice and Fire’ series, “Unfortunately, I am 13 years late.”
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, George R. R. Martin expresses that he is unsure if he will finish all the Game of Thrones books. He is known for the beloved first novel that sparked the global series.
The author is specifically referring to the incompletion of the Song of Ice and Fire series as he is seemingly stalled out on the sixth and second-to-last title, The Winds of Winter. He told the publication, “Unfortunately, I am 13 years late. Every time I say that, I’m [like], ‘How could I be 13 years late?’ I don’t know, it happens a day at a time.” The Game of Thrones novel saw Martin begin writing in 1991 before its 1996 publishing date. He later published the second book from the series A Clash of Kings in 1998, A Storm of Swords in 2000, A Feast of Crows in 2005 and A Dance with Dragons in 2011. The series is expected to feature seven novels with The Winds of Winter in at six and A Dream of Spring as the seventh.
Martin addressed the possibility of not finishing The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring as final novels in the series by reassuring fans that the books are “still a priority.” While that is the case, he is uncertain and is not making any guarantees, “A lot of people are already writing obituaries for me. [They're saying] ‘Oh, he’ll never be finished.’ Maybe they’re right. I don’t know. I’m alive right now! I seem pretty vital!” He added that at the moment, he has no plans to retire, even quipping that he is “not a golfer.”
In Martin’s Game of Thrones world, the TV series House of Dragon has been a major success at Max. Currently, Martin has wrote and executive produced the prequel series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which are based on his Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas and slated for a 2025 release on HBO. Various other spin-offs including Aegon’s Conquest, The Sea Snake/Nine Voyages and 10,000 Ships are all in early developments. Stay tuned on the future of the series.
