On June 15, 2022, Microsoft ceased all support and retired Internet Explorer after 27 years of service. Serving as the starting point of many people’s experience with the Internet, the pioneering web browser became obsolete with the advent of other browsers and Microsoft’s transition to Edge.

Officially laying Internet Explorer to rest for good, earlier this week, Microsoft shared the news of a Windows update that would disable the browser. “The retired, out-of-support Internet Explorer 11 desktop application has been permanently disabled through a Microsoft Edge update on certain versions of Windows 10.”

After ceasing support, Internet Explorer was still being used despite being a security risk due to the absence of support. Unlike modern browsers, IE could access legacy websites or specific services that feature aged constructions that could only run on Microsoft’s iconic browser. But even that came to an end eventually with the addition of “Internet Explorer” mode on Microsoft Edge.

Internet Explorer was launched August 16, 1995 and officially saw its end February 14, 2023.
