Sotheby's Auctions Lionel Messi's 2022 FIFA World Cup-Worn Argentina Jerseys
Poised to become the most valuable collection of sports memorabilia at auction.
A year ago, Lionel Messi led the national team of Argentina to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The world turned their attention to Messi, who has been chasing the World Cup trophy triumph since he first played. Finally doing so in his fifth appearance at the tournament, the Argentine captain cemented his legacy as one of the greatest of all times, delivering the first World Cup title in 36 years to his country.
Sotheby’s is now slated to auction off a set of six match-worn Argentina shirts from his historic run in Qatar. The set of six jerseys worn by Messi include the ones worn in the first half of the Final, Semi-final, Quarter-final, Round of 16, and two of the three Group Stage matches. Each of the six white and sky blue Argentina home shirts will be offered in a dedicated sale open for bidding from November 30 to December 14. Estimated to become the most valuable collection of spots memorabilia at auction, it is expected to auction for over $10 million USD.
The six world cup jerseys are auctioned by American tech startup AC Momento. A portion of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to UNICAS Project, led by Sant Joan de Déu (SJD) Barcelona Children’s Hospital with the support of Leo Messi Foundation, to meet the needs of children suffering from rare diseases. The auction opens on November 30 alongside a public exhibition at Sotheby’s New York.
