Paolo Salvador Is Showcasing His Latest Allegorical Paintings at Peres Projects

Paolo Salvador is a Peruvian-born, Berlin-based artist who creates mythological paintings that comment on themes related to home, displacement and belonging.
For his latest solo exhibition, Salvador presents Los últimos días del gato de fuego (The Last Days of the Fire Cat) at Peres Projects in Milan. On view across the ornate halls of the gallery is a suite of new paintings, each of which imbue Andean traditions and folklore with Salvador’s own life experiences growing up in Peru and now living in Europe.
This allegorical approach often leads to dreamlike paintings that are free of any recognizable associations, such as a particular landmark or time period, in favor of a cosmological aesthetic that contemplates universal experiences such as joy, grief and connection.
Every act within his practice is calculated, from the types of pigments he uses and where they are sourced from, to the amount of breaths he takes and the pressure he applies with each brushstroke. This stems from Salvador’s belief that painting is a dance that is best performed when he allows his intuition to guide the process.
