Matt Shakman could be directing Marvel‘s upcoming Fantastic Four film following the exit of Jon Watts.

According to reports, the WandaVision director is currently “in early talks” with the studio and although Marvel has not formally offered him the job, “things are headed in the right direction.” Deadline adds, however, that the search for Watts’ replacement could last until the fall as Marvel is also speaking with other candidates.

Shakman played an instrumental role in Marvel Studios‘ foray into Disney+, serving as director of the Emmy-winning and first Marvel Studios series, WandaVision. The filmmaker was also nominated for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

Watts exited the Fantastic Four project just shortly after his film Spider-Man: No Way Home became the sixth highest-grossing film in the global box office. The filmmaker’s departure from the movie was amicable, with Watts stating, “Making three Spider-Man films was an incredible and life-changing experience for me. I’m eternally grateful to have been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for seven years. I’m hopeful we’ll work together again and I can’t wait to see the amazing vision for Fantastic Four brought to life.”

Elsewhere in entertainment, Netflix has cancelled its live-action Resident Evil series.
